WOW.... these are great shots! I really enjoyed the little cultural lesson today!

Down here in rural southwestern Turkey the individual sunnet is fast disappearing as families can no longer afford to buy all the fancy clothing and finance the feast that traditionally accompanies the event. Now they 'hire' the clothes and boys are circumcised in groups with families sharing the cost of communal feasting.

In 1971 I witnessed a precursor to this low-cost sunnet practise in Gelibolu where a group of boys from the village were circumcised in a kind of village hall complete with stage and curtains. The boys and doctor were behind the curtains and, after each successful snip, curtains were drawn back, everyone applauded and shouted Masallah and doctor and boy took a bow. Then curtains were drawn again for next snip. When all were done there was a final group bow, and even louder cheers and Masallahs before families claimed their offspring and bore them off for feasting at home.

There is also a tradition of riding round in a vehicle procession with much horn sounding and boy(s) to be circumcised standing up in back of pickup in their white outfits at the head of the convoy. With traffic in Istanbul I doubt you get the parade.

The Arabic word is actually Mashallah 'What Allah Wishes'. The Turkish spelling is Maşallah.

Yah, I know. but I don't have a turkish keyboard.

What do they do with the foreskin?

Great pics.

NICE
