Confused? Read this article by Hugh Pope, a journalist who wrote a moderately interesting book about the Turkic world, called Sons of the Conquerors: Rise of the Turkic World. It's worth checking out if you want to understand the historical motives behind and future prospects for Turkey's efforts to shape modern central Asia. It's a good read, even though I think it underplays the much more potent and damaging influence of the Soviets in that region.
