Years back, three of us traveled out "East", crossing off all the cities starting with A. Ankara, Adana, Antep, Antakya, ending in Mardin. Saw enough museums for a life-time, toured the stony barren castles, fed the frighteningly fearless fish of Urfa, and did whatever the guide books recommended. ( like Zombies on tour)

Whilst in Harran, we were plagued by unwashed children bleeting "Amca, kamel var mi?" There is apparently a dire pen shortage in those parts. The view from the terrace was dream-like, with a plain that stretched in Syria as far as the eye could spy. The best part was that we flew back instead of returning the way we came. I am sure I would have died if I had had to have done THAT!
